Rangers line up next move for Thelo Aasgaard with ‘English club’ switch planned

Rangers could look to send Thelo Aasgaard back to England if his loan spell with Anderlecht does not result in a permanent transfer.

Former Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness believes the Championship could provide the ideal platform for the Norway international to rebuild his reputation and increase his value before Rangers eventually look to move him on.

Aasgaard joined Anderlecht on loan with the Belgian club given a £6million option to make the move permanent.

However, the 24-year-old has struggled for regular playing time since arriving in Belgium, managing just 112 minutes of league football so far.

That lack of game time could leave Rangers assessing alternative options for the midfielder if Anderlecht decide against triggering their purchase clause.

Championship could be Aasgaard’s next destination

Rangers paid around £3.5million to sign Aasgaard in 2025, but his time at Ibrox has failed to produce the impact the club would have hoped for.

Derek McInnes also made it clear during the summer that the midfielder was not part of his plans, paving the way for his temporary move to Anderlecht.

Wyness believes the Belgian top flight should have provided Aasgaard with an environment capable of bringing out his qualities, but admits his slow start could force Rangers to reconsider their strategy.

Speaking on Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness suggested that an English Championship club could eventually provide the answer.

“I think they’d probably try and place him in the Championship in my view and hope that can work,” he said.

“There’ll be clubs mid-table and below in the Championship that would look to take him, and I think it may be better suited to him.

“It should work over there, but it depends on the manager and how the manager views him.”

Wyness believes Rangers need to ensure every player in their squad has a clear pathway, particularly when it comes to protecting or increasing their transfer value.

He added that the Championship could offer Aasgaard a stronger “shop window” and give him the opportunity to find a manager and system that suit his game.

“The Championship in my view would be a better shop window for him,” Wyness said.

“He needs to fit in with a certain type of manager and a certain style of play, then I think they can get the asset value.”

Rangers continue to explore January options

While Aasgaard’s future remains uncertain, Rangers are also assessing potential additions to McInnes’ squad.

Football Insider recently reported that the Ibrox club could have a straightforward opportunity to sign Djurgarden winger Oskar Fallenius in January.

The 24-year-old’s contract with the Swedish club expires at the end of December, meaning he could become available on a free transfer.

Fallenius has started just 10 of Djurgarden’s 22 league matches this season, but has still contributed two goals and three assists.

His underlying numbers also stand out, with the winger leading his team for expected assists per 90 minutes and sprints per 90.

Rangers could therefore have decisions to make at both ends of their squad, with Aasgaard potentially heading back towards England while McInnes looks to strengthen his attacking options.
