Derek McInnes and Celtic coach Mark Fotheringham were involved in a heated touchline confrontation during the early stages of Sunday’s Old Firm meeting at Celtic Park.

The Rangers manager and Fotheringham were both shown yellow cards by referee John Beaton following the tense exchange, although it was not immediately clear what triggered the incident.

McInnes appeared visibly frustrated moments before the confrontation and seemed to be remonstrating with the officials over an on-field decision.

Fotheringham then became involved in the discussion, with the situation quickly escalating as the two coaches exchanged words in the technical area.

Beaton made his way towards the touchline and produced yellow cards for both men before they continued their discussion with the fourth official.

Celtic manager Martin O’Neill was also drawn into the incident and appeared to intervene, gesturing for Fotheringham to return towards the home dugout as the confrontation continued.

The early flashpoint added further tension to an already highly charged Old Firm encounter, with both benches visibly animated during the opening stages.
