Celtic boss Martin O’Neill faces backlash over tense interview with female reporter

Martin O’Neill has come under scrutiny following Celtic’s difficult start to the Europa League, with the manager’s pre-match exchange with TNT Sports reporter Connie McLaughlin becoming another talking point around the club.

Celtic suffered a 3-1 home defeat to Ferencváros on Thursday, adding to the frustration created by their 3-0 loss to Rangers in the Scottish League Cup just days earlier. The back-to-back defeats have increased the pressure surrounding O’Neill ahead of another meeting with Rangers.

Before the Ferencváros match, O’Neill made four changes to his starting XI, including bringing Viljami Sinisalo back into goal in place of Sam Johnstone.

McLaughlin asked the Celtic boss to explain his reasoning behind the goalkeeper change, but O’Neill was reluctant to discuss the decision shortly before kick-off.

“No, I’ll not talk to you about the thinking behind that one,” O’Neill said.

He added that Sinisalo had always been expected to start the match before telling McLaughlin that he did not believe it was his responsibility to explain every selection decision during a pre-match interview.

McLaughlin replied that supporters would also be asking the same question, to which O’Neill responded that he would explain his decision to the fans through Celtic TV.

The exchange generated significant discussion online, with some viewers criticising O’Neill’s tone towards the reporter. However, McLaughlin later clarified one particular point after some social media users incorrectly believed the Celtic manager had called her “honey”. She confirmed that he had actually addressed her by her name, “Connie.”

O’Neill subsequently revisited the interview and acknowledged that he can become “a bit tetchy” during media duties, while maintaining that he accepts questions about his decisions once a match has been played.

The attention surrounding the interview came after another disappointing night for Celtic. Ferencváros took the lead through a deflected effort before Mika Baur equalised, but Kristoffer Zachariassen restored the visitors’ advantage before Daniel Arzani sealed a 3-1 victory.

Celtic now face Rangers again at Parkhead, with O’Neill and his players under pressure to respond after consecutive defeats.
