Scottish football celebrates financial milestone as SPFL clubs share £50m boost
The SPFL has reported the strongest financial results in its history, with almost £50 million distributed to its 42 member clubs.
The league body recorded £58 million in income in its latest accounts, allowing it to distribute £49.6m to clubs across Scotland’s four professional divisions.
That figure leaves the SPFL just short of its £50m distribution target for 2029, while fees paid directly to members increased by 17 per cent to £41.2m.
Chief executive Neil Doncaster believes the figures demonstrate the growing appeal of Scottish football, with broadcast and commercial revenue playing a major role in the organisation’s increased income.
The SPFL’s current broadcasting agreements with Sky Sports and Premier Sports, alongside its main sponsorship arrangement with William Hill, have helped drive the rise in revenue.
“These are by far the strongest financial results in the SPFL’s history,” Doncaster said.
“Turnover and total group distributions both surpassing the records set last year, and we are determined to maintain that momentum.”
SPFL closing in on £50m distribution target
The latest figures represent another significant step towards the SPFL’s long-term financial goal.
Doncaster also pointed to attendances as another key factor behind the organisation’s progress, with member clubs recording their highest annual crowds during the SPFL era.
The previous campaign also generated considerable broadcast interest, with a record number of matches shown live.
Doncaster believes the combination of strong commercial revenue, television exposure and supporters filling stadiums has strengthened Scottish football’s position.
He added: “Crucially, as well as record-breaking commercial income, our member clubs have also welcomed the highest yearly attendances in the SPFL era, following one of the most exciting seasons Scottish football has ever experienced.”
SPFL chairman Murdoch MacLennan also welcomed the latest accounts and praised the relationship between the league’s staff and its member clubs.
“These latest accounts are extremely encouraging and a real credit to the partnerships between the small, dedicated staff at the SPFL and our member clubs,” MacLennan said.
He added that the organisation believes it can reach its £50m distribution target this season, potentially achieving the objective two years earlier than originally planned.
Where the SPFL’s distributions go
The £49.6m distributed to clubs comes from several different revenue streams.
These include payments based on league position, parachute payments, ScottishPower Women’s Premier League funding, prize money from the Premier Sports Cup and KDM Evolution Trophy, as well as facility fees for William Hill Premiership fixtures broadcast on Premier Sports.
The latest accounts therefore represent a significant financial milestone for Scottish football, with the SPFL now within touching distance of its £50m target.
