Rangers boss Andrew Cavenagh backed into a corner after Danny Röhl decision
Rangers are expected to undergo major changes during the upcoming transfer window as the club looks to restore success at Ibrox, with Andrew Cavenagh and the club’s new ownership group firmly backing Danny Röhl to lead the rebuild.
The American-led consortium, including 49ers Enterprises, has publicly shown confidence in the German coach despite Rangers falling short in the Scottish Premiership title race. During a press conference on 17 May, club officials defended Röhl and made clear their belief that deeper squad issues — rather than management alone — were the primary reason Rangers failed to get over the line this season.

Speaking on Four Lads Had A Dream on 17 May, pundit Stevie Clifford argued that Rangers have repeatedly found themselves trapped in a familiar cycle. According to Clifford, the club often experiences a short-term uplift under a new manager, briefly reignites hopes of a title challenge, but ultimately collapses when pressure intensifies. In his view, the ownership group believes the recurring problem lies largely within the playing squad rather than whoever occupies the dugout.
Röhl arrived at Rangers during a difficult period, taking charge when the club trailed the league leaders by 13 points. The former Sheffield Wednesday boss initially sparked an impressive turnaround, helping Rangers recover momentum and unexpectedly force themselves back into the title race.
However, despite entering the post-split fixtures in a strong position and with renewed optimism among supporters, Rangers failed to sustain their challenge during the decisive period of the campaign. A poor run of form eventually saw the club lose ground, while across the city, the greater experience of Celtic boss Martin O’Neill proved crucial as he guided the Hoops through a turbulent season and toward another league title.
By standing firmly behind Röhl, Cavenagh and the Rangers hierarchy have effectively increased pressure on themselves. Publicly committing to the manager means expectations will now grow for clear progress next season, particularly if significant investment is made in the squad over the summer.
A major rebuild appears unavoidable, with several areas of the team already viewed as priorities. Goalkeeper concerns have resurfaced after Jack Butland endured another difficult outing despite Rangers’ 5-2 victory over Falkirk, leaving some supporters questioning whether reinforcements are needed between the posts.
Defensively, Rangers are also expected to be active in the market, especially with several loan players due to return to their parent clubs at the end of the season. That leaves gaps in the backline which may require experienced and high-quality additions if the club is serious about mounting another title challenge.
Midfield is another area likely to come under scrutiny. Questions continue to surround the future of Nicolas Raskin, while recent performances have exposed concerns over energy levels and consistency in the centre of the park. As a result, fresh options could become a priority for recruitment staff.
In attack, despite Youssef Chermiti ending the season on a high with a hat-trick against Falkirk, there remains a feeling that Rangers need a proven and dependable goalscorer capable of delivering consistently over the course of a campaign.
Ultimately, Rangers’ decision-makers appear convinced that squad surgery — rather than another managerial change — offers the best route back to competing for trophies. However, by backing Röhl so strongly, Cavenagh has also ensured that both manager and ownership will face increased scrutiny if results fail to improve next season.
