Danny Röhl’s heated confrontation with Andrew Cavenagh at Rangers comes to light

Rangers manager Danny Röhl has reportedly been involved in a heated exchange with chairman Andrew Cavenagh following the club’s damaging 2-1 defeat to Hearts at Tynecastle — a result that effectively ended the Gers’ Scottish Premiership title hopes.

The loss proved to be one of the defining blows in Rangers’ failed title challenge, with the club unable to recover after surrendering an early advantage. Danny Röhl’s side had initially taken control of the contest when Dujon Sterling found the net with a looping effort, but Hearts fought back through strikes from Stephen Kingsley and captain Lawrence Shankland to secure a crucial victory and keep their own championship ambitions alive.

The defeat sparked major frustration among Rangers supporters, particularly as it marked another league setback during a disastrous post-split run that saw momentum evaporate at the worst possible moment. What had once looked like a genuine title push quickly unravelled, leading to increased criticism of Röhl and growing concerns over the direction of the team.

Despite the season now having concluded, fresh details surrounding the aftermath of the Tynecastle clash continue to emerge. Reports have suggested emotions boiled over behind the scenes, with claims that Röhl confronted Rangers chairman Andrew Cavenagh in the tunnel shortly after full time.

Speculation around the manager’s future has intensified in recent weeks after Rangers finished the campaign in disappointing fashion, with some sections of the fanbase questioning whether the damage caused by the collapse can realistically be repaired under the current coaching setup.

At the same time, Röhl has also been linked with interest from German side Wolfsburg, creating further uncertainty around his future at Ibrox. However, Cavenagh recently attempted to ease concerns by publicly reaffirming his support for the Rangers boss, insisting faith remains in the manager despite growing scrutiny.

That backing has sparked debate among supporters, with some suggesting it may simply be a strategic move. One theory put forward is that Rangers could be attempting to avoid paying compensation if they were to dismiss Röhl, instead positioning themselves to potentially receive a fee should another club move for him.

Fuel was added to the controversy when STV broadcaster and journalist Callum Bell claimed to have direct knowledge of an explosive moment involving Röhl and Cavenagh after the Hearts defeat. Speaking on The Radio Football Show, Bell alleged that the Rangers manager angrily confronted the chairman in the tunnel, demanding greater leadership within the squad.

According to Bell, Röhl was heard insisting to Cavenagh that Rangers desperately needed more leaders in the dressing room — comments which, if accurate, could offer insight into the manager’s frustrations regarding the mentality and character of the current squad.

Bell further suggested that if such an exchange occurred openly, Rangers players themselves would likely be aware of the manager’s feelings, potentially raising questions over dressing-room dynamics.

Many supporters may ultimately sympathise with Röhl’s frustrations, particularly given Rangers’ struggles under pressure throughout the season. Despite flashes of promise, the squad repeatedly failed to deliver when it mattered most, leaving many to question whether major personnel changes are needed.

The reported incident may also add further context to existing tensions involving senior players. James Tavernier’s strained relationship with Röhl has already attracted attention in recent weeks. The Rangers captain was surprisingly left out of the starting lineup for the defeat to Hibernian at Ibrox, reportedly reacting angrily before later returning to say farewell to supporters amid speculation surrounding his future.

Questions have also surfaced over midfielder Nicolas Raskin after rumours circulated suggesting his recent absence may have been linked to internal tensions, though those claims remain unconfirmed.

If reports of Röhl’s confrontation with Cavenagh are accurate, it may underline the extent of frustration simmering behind the scenes at Rangers following another season that ended in disappointment — and strengthen the case for significant changes at Ibrox this summer.
