Steve Clarke explains stance on Connor Barron after Scotland setback
Rangers may have strong representation in Scotland’s squad for the 2026 World Cup, but Connor Barron will not be among those making the trip.
The national side secured an emphatic 4-1 victory over Curacao at Hampden Park on Saturday, with Rangers players playing a key role. New signing Lawrence Shankland and Findlay Curtis both found the net, while John Souttar and Liam Kelly also featured for Steve Clarke’s side.

Much of the attention focused on Shankland following his recent move from Hearts to Ibrox, but concern quickly shifted to former Rangers midfielder Billy Gilmour after the Napoli star suffered a knee injury that has ruled him out of the World Cup.
With Gilmour unavailable, many expected Barron to be handed a late call-up after impressing in his return from injury at Rangers. However, Clarke made a surprise decision by opting for Manchester United youngster Tyler Fletcher instead.
Despite only making a brief senior appearance before Saturday, Fletcher was selected to replace Gilmour as Scotland finalised their squad for the tournament in North America.
Speaking to Sky Sports before departure, Clarke admitted informing players of their omission had been one of the toughest parts of the process.
The Scotland boss revealed he had little sleep after having to disappoint several players at the last moment, naming Barron alongside Lennon Miller and Andy Irving as those unfortunate to miss out.
Clarke explained that Fletcher had impressed during training camp and felt the youngster had done enough to earn his place, while also acknowledging the disappointment felt by those left behind.
Although Barron misses out, Rangers will still have a strong presence in the Scotland squad. Souttar and Shankland appear likely starters, while Curtis has enhanced his chances after continuing his fine form with a goal against Curacao following an impressive loan spell at Kilmarnock.
With Scotland preparing to begin their World Cup campaign against Haiti, Rangers supporters will be hoping their contingent can play a major role on the biggest stage.
