Phil Neumann reacts to Dael Fry signing with Birmingham City statement
Phil Neumann has insisted his full focus remains on Birmingham City despite the club strengthening its defence with the summer signing of Dael Fry.
The German centre-back established himself as a regular in Chris Davies’ side during his first season after arriving from Hannover 96, forming a solid partnership with Christoph Klarer and ending the campaign as one of the manager’s trusted defenders.
However, Fry’s arrival has increased competition for places, leading to speculation over Neumann’s role ahead of the new Championship season. The 29-year-old, though, says he remains committed to Birmingham and is determined to help the club achieve its ambitions.

“I feel very settled in Birmingham and my complete focus is on the new season,” Neumann told BILD.
“Of course, in the future, I’d like to get the very best out of my career. Returning to Germany one day would be nice because playing in the Bundesliga has always been a dream. But at the moment, all my attention is on Birmingham and what we want to achieve.”
Neumann also believes he is entering the strongest period of his career.
“I think this is a great age to be a centre-back. You have the experience but you’re still physically at your peak. I want to make the most of these years, have an excellent season, and then see what the future brings.”
The defender arrived at St Andrew’s with the ambition of helping Birmingham earn promotion to the Premier League, and that objective remains unchanged despite expectations of a fiercely competitive Championship campaign.
With clubs such as West Ham United and Wolverhampton Wanderers also targeting an immediate return to the top flight, Birmingham know the challenge ahead will be significant.
Neumann, however, believes the club is moving in the right direction.
“You can really feel that something special is happening here,” he said.
“The supporters are incredibly passionate, the stadium was almost always full last season, and there are even long-term plans to build a new stadium. It’s an exciting project to be part of.”
