Frank Lampard issues warning to Coventry City owner Doug King

Coventry City F.C. secured automatic promotion to the Premier League after a 1-1 draw with Blackburn Rovers F.C. on Friday night.

Frank Lampard was later named EFL Manager of the Year on Sunday, recognising his role in guiding the club back to the top flight after strong competition from Kim Hellberg, Sergej Jakirovic, and Alex Neil.

It marks Coventry’s return to the top division for the first time since 2001, ending a 25-year absence from top-flight football. The Sky Blues had come close in recent seasons, losing out in the play-offs to Luton Town and Sunderland, before finally achieving promotion this campaign.

Attention now turns to preparation for life in the Premier League, with the club aiming not just to survive but to establish themselves at the level. Coventry could also still secure the Championship title if they take maximum points from their final two matches.

Speaking after promotion, Lampard reflected on his relationship with owner Doug King, describing it as open and positive, with strong communication between all parties at the club.

He explained that the working relationship allows for honest discussions, even disagreements, which he believes is important for progress. Lampard also praised the club’s structure and recruitment setup, highlighting the collaborative environment at the Coventry setup.

However, he also issued a clear reminder that significant challenges lie ahead, stressing that the step up to the Premier League will require major work from everyone involved. He emphasised that both he and King understand the scale of the task as they prepare to strengthen the squad for the top flight.

Lampard added that credit should be given to King for the progress made at the club, particularly in improving facilities and supporting its rapid rise through the divisions.
