Dan Neil explains why he chose Rangers over other transfer options

Dan Neil has revealed that the opportunity to join Rangers was the “perfect challenge” at this stage of his career, explaining why he chose Ibrox despite attracting interest from clubs including Wolves and Southampton.

The midfielder completed a free transfer to Rangers earlier this month after leaving Sunderland, signing a three-year contract with Derek McInnes’ side.

Neil had previously been linked with a move to Glasgow during the January transfer window, but instead joined Ipswich Town on loan, helping the Tractor Boys secure promotion to the Premier League before his Sunderland contract expired.

Now settled at Ibrox, the 24-year-old says Rangers offered everything he was looking for as he sought a fresh start.

“I think the word ‘challenge’ sums up my decision,” Neil told the Glasgow Times.

“The last couple of years went really well for me in the Championship, but I wanted something different—a new chapter and a fresh target to aim for. When Rangers came in, I felt it was exactly the right challenge, and that made the decision straightforward.”

Neil also believes his experience of playing under pressure at Sunderland prepared him for life at one of Scotland’s biggest clubs.

“I’ve always played in front of large crowds where winning is expected every week,” he said.

“That kind of environment motivates me every single day. The expectations from the supporters push you to prepare properly and perform consistently, and that was a huge reason why Rangers appealed to me.”

The former Sunderland captain has already demonstrated his leadership qualities after wearing the armband during Rangers’ recent behind-closed-doors friendly against Kaizer Chiefs in Spain.

Neil also explained why a move to Rangers failed to materialise in January despite the club’s interest.

Although talks took place, football regulations meant a transfer was not possible at the time, leading him to spend the second half of last season on loan at Ipswich instead.

Following the expiration of his Sunderland contract this summer, Rangers reignited their interest, allowing Neil to finally complete the move he believes is the ideal next step in his career.
