Rangers prepare new contract bid to fend off Middlesbrough interest in rising star

Rangers are preparing for a potential transfer battle with Middlesbrough as they step up efforts to retain one of their brightest young talents this summer.

It has already been a busy start to the transfer window at Ibrox. Rangers wasted little time strengthening Danny Röhl’s squad, moving quickly to sign former Hearts captain Lawrence Shankland, while links to further additions, including Wrexham’s Josh Windass, continue to gather pace.

However, alongside plans to strengthen, there are also concerns over keeping hold of promising players already at the club.

According to reports from TeamTalk, Rangers are preparing to open contract discussions with teenage talent Calum Adamson in a bid to fend off growing interest from Championship side Middlesbrough.

The young defender remains highly regarded internally at Ibrox, particularly after an encouraging loan spell with Alloa Athletic last season. Rangers are understood to believe Adamson still has a genuine pathway into the first team and are keen to secure his long-term future before rival interest intensifies.

Middlesbrough, though, are believed to be monitoring the situation closely. Reports claim Boro representatives have already carried out in-person scouting checks on Adamson and could move swiftly if negotiations over a new Rangers deal stall.

The teenager’s contract situation is already being viewed as one of the more intriguing stories involving young Scottish talent this summer, and Rangers will be eager to avoid uncertainty dragging on.

There is also thought to be a clear development plan for Adamson at Ibrox. Rangers are reportedly keen for him to gain more senior experience through another loan spell next season after his progress at Alloa.

Yet from the player’s perspective, patience may only stretch so far if immediate first-team opportunities fail to materialise.

A permanent move elsewhere could become increasingly tempting should Middlesbrough present a clearer pathway to regular senior football.

That said, Rangers may feel they have an important advantage in Danny Röhl. The manager has shown a willingness to trust and improve young players, with several emerging talents benefiting from his coaching this past season.

The hope inside Ibrox is likely that Adamson sees his future as part of that long-term vision rather than elsewhere.

For now, Rangers remain confident they can convince the teenager to commit, but Middlesbrough’s interest means this is one situation likely to be watched closely in the weeks ahead.
