Jack Butland departure edges closer as Rangers transfer twist surfaces

Rangers appear to be heading towards another major summer rebuild at Ibrox, with sweeping changes expected under the club’s new leadership.

Following the arrival of the 49ers-backed ownership group alongside Andrew Cavenagh, there is a clear determination to avoid another disappointing campaign, and the squad is already beginning to evolve.

James Tavernier’s departure signalled the start of a new era, while the early signing of Lawrence Shankland from Hearts underlined Rangers’ intent to move quickly in the market. However, it seems the changes may not stop there, with growing uncertainty now surrounding the future of goalkeeper Jack Butland.

The experienced stopper has remained a divisive figure among supporters during his spell in Glasgow. While his shot-stopping and penalty-saving ability have often been praised, recurring errors have continued to frustrate sections of the fanbase.

One recent example came during Rangers’ final-day victory over Falkirk, when a poor touch from Butland led directly to an own goal and briefly handed the opposition a route back into the match.

That mistake has only added to speculation that Rangers are considering changes in the goalkeeping department this summer.

Reports have linked the club with Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson, with suggestions the England youth international could be available for around £8 million. While Rangers are understood to have explored the situation, the fee is currently viewed as too expensive.

Even so, the interest itself may hint at the club’s long-term thinking regarding Butland.

With only one year remaining on his contract, the goalkeeper’s position at Ibrox no longer appears entirely secure. Rangers may now face a decision over whether to move him on this summer or risk losing him for nothing further down the line.

Despite occasional links with Premier League clubs such as Nottingham Forest, a move back to England’s top flight would raise questions. While English goalkeepers are often attractive due to homegrown registration rules, Butland would likely struggle for regular minutes at that level.

At 33, the former England international may still prioritise playing time over becoming a backup option elsewhere.

For Rangers, though, the search for greater consistency could shape their transfer plans. Danny Röhl is expected to continue reshaping the squad ahead of next season, and the goalkeeping position may yet become one of the biggest talking points of the summer window.
