VAR audio settles Celtic-Motherwell penalty debate as key details emerge

Freshly released VAR audio from Celtic’s dramatic Premiership victory over Motherwell has offered new clarity on one of the season’s most fiercely debated moments.

The controversial incident saw referee John Beaton initially wave play on before later awarding Celtic a dramatic late penalty following a VAR intervention led by Andrew Dallas and assistant VAR Sean Carr.

The decision sparked widespread debate and was later reviewed by the Scottish Football Association’s Key Match Incident panel, but the newly released audio now gives supporters a clearer understanding of how officials reached their conclusion.

One striking aspect of the exchange is the confidence shown inside the VAR room. After reviewing multiple angles, Dallas and Carr quickly agreed that the ball had struck an arm positioned unnaturally.

“Definitely hits a hand,” Dallas says during the review, while also stressing that the arm was “above shoulder height” — an assessment Carr immediately supported.

The recording also reveals a brief communication breakdown, with Beaton temporarily unable to hear the VAR team during the incident due to comms issues. During that delay, the referee focused on a clash of heads involving players before eventually reconnecting with officials in the VAR hub.

Once communication was restored, Dallas recommended an on-field review, explaining that the ball had come from a throw-in and made contact with an arm raised above shoulder height. Beaton sought confirmation that contact had clearly been made before heading to the monitor.

After reviewing the footage from multiple angles, the referee swiftly came to a verdict.

“OK, penalty kick,” Beaton said after the replay was shown. “I’m awarding a penalty kick, no sanction.”

The audio makes clear that the recommendation rested on two main points: certainty over contact with the arm and the belief that the arm position met the threshold for a handball offence.

Although opinions among supporters are unlikely to fully align, the recording shows little hesitation among officials once the footage was examined. Dallas, Carr and Beaton all arrived at the same interpretation — that a punishable handball had occurred.

For many, the debate may continue, but the released audio provides the clearest insight yet into why the decisive call was made at Fir Park.
