Three managers Wrexham could turn to if Phil Parkinson is shown the door

Wrexham’s start to the 2026/27 Championship campaign has fallen short of expectations, with Phil Parkinson facing growing scrutiny following a disappointing run of results.

The Red Dragons suffered another setback on Tuesday night after surrendering their lead in a home defeat to West Bromwich Albion.

Kieffer Moore put Wrexham ahead shortly after the hour mark, raising hopes of a positive result at the Racecourse Ground. However, Isaac Price and Aune Heggebo struck late to complete the turnaround and leave the Welsh side empty-handed.

The defeat leaves Wrexham with just two victories from their opening 10 league matches, increasing pressure on Parkinson to find a solution before their difficult start develops into a bigger problem.

The 58-year-old has earned considerable credit for his achievements since arriving in July 2021, having guided the club from the National League through the divisions and into the Championship. Nevertheless, his previous successes may not be enough to shield him from criticism if results fail to improve.

Should the club’s hierarchy eventually decide that a change in the dugout is necessary, several experienced managers could come into consideration. Here are three names Wrexham could explore if they part ways with Parkinson.

Steve Cooper

Steve Cooper could offer Wrexham a manager with an impressive record in the Championship and experience of guiding ambitious clubs towards promotion.

During his time in the division with Swansea City and Nottingham Forest, Cooper consistently delivered strong results, securing top-six finishes before leading Forest back to the Premier League in 2022.

His subsequent spells at Leicester City and Danish side Brøndby were less successful, with both appointments ending in his dismissal. He has been available since leaving the Danish club in May.

Wrexham’s ambitions extend beyond simply establishing themselves in the Championship, and Cooper’s experience of navigating promotion campaigns could make him an intriguing candidate if the club decides to make a managerial change.

A potential move to the Racecourse Ground would give him another opportunity to demonstrate his ability to build a competitive side and challenge near the top of the table.

Rob Edwards

Rob Edwards is another potential option who has experience of working under pressure and helping clubs achieve ambitious objectives.

The Welsh manager made a strong impression at Luton Town, guiding the club to promotion to the Premier League in 2023 after helping them progress through the Championship play-offs.

His achievements at Kenilworth Road demonstrated his ability to organise a team and get the most out of his squad during a demanding promotion campaign.

Edwards later took charge at Middlesbrough before moving to Wolverhampton Wanderers in November 2025. His time at Wolves ended the following summer, leaving him available for another managerial opportunity.

For Wrexham, Edwards could represent an appealing option because of his familiarity with English football and his experience of guiding a club through a major transition.

If the Red Dragons decide to change direction, his record at Luton would provide an obvious reason for the club to consider his credentials.

Steven Gerrard

Steven Gerrard would bring considerable profile and top-level playing experience to Wrexham if the club ever decided to pursue a high-profile managerial appointment.

The Liverpool legend began his managerial career with Rangers in 2018 and enjoyed considerable success in Scotland. His biggest achievement came in the 2020/21 campaign, when Rangers won the Scottish Premiership without losing a league match.

He subsequently moved to Aston Villa before taking charge of Saudi Arabian club Al-Ettifaq. Those later appointments proved more challenging, and Gerrard has since been looking for the right opportunity to continue his managerial career.

Wrexham’s growing ambitions and financial backing could make the club an interesting proposition for a manager seeking a fresh challenge. However, whether Gerrard would be the right fit would depend on the club’s long-term plans, recruitment strategy and expectations.

His experience at Rangers could be valuable if Wrexham aim to compete for promotion, although his managerial record outside Scotland would also need to be considered.

For now, Parkinson remains the central figure in Wrexham’s dugout, but continued disappointing results could intensify the debate over his future. Cooper, Edwards and Gerrard offer three different profiles the club could examine if the situation eventually reaches the point where a change becomes necessary.
