Wilder delivers honest assessment after Sheffield United edge past Rovers

Chris Wilder admitted Sheffield United were far from their best at times but was delighted with the character they showed to come from behind and claim all three points at Ewood Park.

The Blades found themselves behind but turned the game around before half-time, with Tom Cannon and Sydie Peck both finding the net. The victory moved Sheffield United into the Championship’s top 10, with Wilder’s side now sitting on nine points from their opening six matches.

Wilder was particularly pleased with the mentality his players displayed after their disappointing second-half showing against Norwich the previous weekend.

The Sheffield United boss acknowledged that consistency remains something every team in the division is searching for, with results continuing to fluctuate from week to week.

He also admitted that his team are not yet producing their best football, but believes the willingness to fight for results is an encouraging sign.

Wilder pointed to the progress made compared with 12 months ago and praised his players for giving everything to secure the win at Blackburn.

Meanwhile, new signing Jordan Ayew was included among the substitutes after agreeing a deal with Sheffield United until the end of the season.

Wilder described Ayew’s arrival as a whirlwind but explained that the Ghana international immediately stood out when the club explored the available free agents.

The manager said he was unwilling to gamble on players who had been without competitive football for long periods, but Ayew offered something different because of his experience and professionalism.

Ayew has earned 120 caps for Ghana and made more than 500 league appearances, with most of his career spent in the Premier League. Wilder also highlighted the positive references he received about the forward, including his character and his time at Leicester last season.

The Sheffield United boss believes Ayew’s versatility will be particularly valuable, with the experienced attacker capable of operating from the left, right, through the middle or as a No. 10.

With Callum O’Hare unavailable, Wilder sees Ayew as an important addition to his attacking options.
