Why Rangers Are Without a Fixture This Weekend

Rangers will not be in Scottish Premiership action this weekend after their scheduled meeting with St Mirren was postponed.

The fixture was originally due to take place at Ibrox on Saturday, August 22, 2026, but Rangers’ involvement in the UEFA Conference League play-off round has led to the domestic match being moved.

Rangers began their European play-off tie against Jablonec with a 1-0 victory at Ibrox on Thursday, August 20. They will travel to the Czech Republic for the second leg on Thursday, August 27, with a place in the Conference League group stage at stake.

Scottish clubs competing in European play-off rounds are permitted to request changes to their domestic schedules. Rangers have used that option to ensure they have adequate preparation and recovery time around their European commitments, resulting in the St Mirren fixture being postponed.

The new date for the match has not yet been confirmed. There has been speculation that Rangers could face St Mirren between their two scheduled Celtic fixtures in September, although that remains unconfirmed.

The rearranged fixture is expected to be announced once UEFA’s qualifying programme is completed next week.

For now, Rangers’ upcoming schedule includes a crucial European trip followed by two Scottish Premiership fixtures:

  • August 27: Jablonec (away) – UEFA Conference League play-off second leg
  • August 30: Aberdeen (away) – Scottish Premiership
  • September 2: Falkirk (home) – Scottish Premiership

The weekend break therefore gives Rangers additional time to prepare for the decisive second leg against Jablonec before returning to domestic action.
