James Morrison delivers double West Brom injury boost ahead of Blackburn Rovers clash

West Bromwich Albion have received encouraging team news ahead of their Championship meeting with Blackburn Rovers, with Kareem Tunde available for selection and Mikey Johnston making further progress in his recovery.

James Morrison’s side welcome Blackburn to The Hawthorns this weekend, looking to build on their impressive 2-1 comeback victory over Wrexham. The result lifted the mood around the club, and the latest injury update has provided further reasons for optimism ahead of the encounter.

Speaking through the club’s official media channels, Morrison confirmed that Tunde has trained throughout the week and is ready to be considered for selection.

The West Brom manager also delivered a positive update on Johnston, who continues to work towards a return to full fitness.

“Mikey Johnston is continuing to work really well too. He’s on the grass and we’re building him up week by week, so it’s a positive sign. Hopefully he can be available in the coming weeks,” Morrison explained.

Tunde has been unavailable since West Brom’s 1-0 defeat to Wolves before the international break. His return gives Morrison another attacking option, while Johnston and Nolan Galves remain the club’s other longer-term injury concerns.

Kareem Tunde offers West Brom a different attacking option

Since joining West Brom from Levante during the summer transfer window, Tunde has made four appearances as he adapts to English football.

The 21-year-old earned his first start against Charlton Athletic in September, playing 45 minutes before injury interrupted his progress. His latest return to fitness should give him an opportunity to establish himself more firmly within Morrison’s plans.

Tunde brings a different set of qualities to West Brom’s existing wide options. His pace, strength and willingness to take on defenders could provide the Baggies with an alternative attacking approach, particularly against opponents who begin to tire in the second half.

Morrison has also utilised Isaac Price and Harry Whitwell in wider positions, with both players offering technical ability and the capacity to move inside and combine with teammates.

Tunde’s direct style could complement those qualities, allowing West Brom to stretch opposition defences and create additional opportunities in the final third.

Although his return does not guarantee an immediate starting role, having another fit winger available gives Morrison greater flexibility when making tactical adjustments during matches.

Mikey Johnston faces competition upon his return

Johnston’s recovery represents another encouraging development, although the Republic of Ireland international still has work to do before returning to competitive action.

The 27-year-old suffered a serious injury during Morrison’s previous spell as interim manager and has been limited to just 29 minutes of action this season.

His absence has allowed other players, including Price and Whitwell, to strengthen their claims for regular places in the starting XI.

Johnston has previously demonstrated his value to West Brom, recording 12 goals and 16 assists in 99 appearances for the club. Those contributions underline the attacking threat he can provide when fully fit.

However, regaining his previous position may not be straightforward. The competition for places has increased during his absence, meaning he will need to demonstrate his quality and consistency once he is available again.

Derby County were reportedly interested in Johnston during the summer transfer window, but he ultimately remained at The Hawthorns.

His pace and ability to attack defenders could prove particularly useful when West Brom face opponents who leave space behind their defensive line.

For now, Morrison will be encouraged by the progress of both wingers. Tunde’s immediate availability strengthens his options against Blackburn, while Johnston’s gradual return to grass work suggests that another attacking reinforcement could be on the horizon in the coming weeks.
