Transfer boost for Celtic as release clause discount paves way for deal
Celtic are closing in on the signing of Real Oviedo winger Haissem Hassan, with the Scottish champions reportedly set to land the Egypt international for less than his £10.4 million release clause.
Hassan caught the attention of clubs across Europe with his performances at this summer’s World Cup in North America, including an eye-catching display against Argentina in the round of 16.
Celtic had already been monitoring the winger before his impressive World Cup campaign, and it now appears their pursuit is nearing a successful conclusion.
According to La Nueva España, negotiations have reached an advanced stage, with only the final details needing to be resolved before the transfer can be completed.
The Hoops are understood to be keen to finalise the deal before their Champions League play-off tie against LASK, with the first leg scheduled for August 19 at Celtic Park before the return fixture in Austria the following week.
If everything is completed in time, Hassan could potentially be available for Brendan Rodgers’ side in their European campaign.
Celtic’s offer is reportedly below Hassan’s £10.4 million release clause but has nevertheless been accepted by all parties. Real Oviedo are willing to sanction the sale as they look to strengthen their finances following relegation from La Liga last season.
The Spanish club have made several additions during the summer but need to generate significant funds to ease their financial restrictions and register their squad without further salary-cap complications.
Oviedo sporting director David Fernandez previously addressed the possibility of major sales, and Hassan now appears to be the player who could provide the club with the much-needed financial boost.
