Tom Cannon backs Sheffield United squad to rise to Wolves challenge

Tom Cannon has delivered a confident assessment of Sheffield United’s squad, insisting he would not trade any of his teammates for players at rival Championship clubs.

The in-form forward believes the Blades have enough quality to beat any team in the division as they prepare to face Wolves at Bramall Lane on Sunday.

Sheffield United head into the fixture on the back of a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Blackburn Rovers on Tuesday. Cannon scored a composed finish at Ewood Park, taking his tally to three goals for the season, and is hoping to find the net again against Wolves.

Despite losing several important players during a turbulent summer, United have made a respectable start to the campaign. They sit ninth in the early Championship table, having suffered just one defeat.

Cannon believes the current squad remains strong enough to compete with the best teams in the division.

“We all know what happened in the summer, losing good players, but that’s football. It happens, so we just have to get on with it,” he said.

“I think we’re in a strong enough position with the group that we have. It’s a top group of players. I don’t think there’s anyone who you could swap into our team for someone else’s team.

“If you go through the different areas, midfield, goalkeeper, defence, attack, we’re very strong. In my opinion, we’re definitely a top, top side in the Championship. Now, I think it’s just about showing that.”

The Blades have also shown resilience by collecting points even when their performances have not been at their best. Cannon believes that ability could prove valuable over the course of the season.

“I think good teams win ugly. At the end of the day, it’s a game of football and if you win, you win. It doesn’t matter how you win, it’s just about winning,” he explained.

“I think it’s a sign of a good team when maybe things aren’t going your way or the game is a bit ugly, and then you manage to come out of it with a win.”

Wolves, who were relegated from the Premier League last season, are among the favourites to secure an immediate return to the top flight. However, Cannon insists Sheffield United are capable of causing problems for Cesar Peixoto’s side.

“They’re a top side. They were in the Premier League last year and they’ve got Premier League-proven players. They’re no mugs, and they’ve got a squad full of quality,” Cannon said.

“But I think so do we. We’ll focus on them because they’re a good side, but as long as we know how we’re going to set up and how we’re going to play, I think we’re a threat to anyone.

“I think we can beat anyone in the league. So, as long as we’re good and on the day we can show it, I’m sure we can get something from the game.”
