Steven Gerrard reveals why he turned down Rangers return

Steven Gerrard has opened up on the reasons behind his decision to reject a return to Rangers, admitting concerns over recruitment, expectations and family commitments ultimately convinced him to stay away from Ibrox.

The former Rangers manager was heavily linked with a second spell at the club in 2025 as the search began for a successor to Russell Martin. While discussions progressed and a comeback appeared possible, Gerrard chose not to take the opportunity.

Reflecting on the decision, the Liverpool legend revealed that family considerations played a major role. With his wife and children still based in Bahrain following his time with Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq, Gerrard was reluctant to relocate alone and spend significant periods away from them.

He also admitted to having reservations about the squad-building process and whether immediate success would be achievable.

Gerrard explained that a second spell at Rangers would have come with intense pressure to deliver trophies straight away, rather than being given the time to build a project as he did during his first stint in Glasgow.

The 46-year-old acknowledged that he was seriously tempted by the prospect of returning and estimated he was close to accepting the role before deciding the timing was not quite right.

Despite declining the opportunity, Gerrard stressed his affection for Rangers remains strong and suggested the possibility of a future return should not be ruled out completely.

He also threw his support behind current manager Derek McInnes, praising the backing he has received and expressing hope that further additions will strengthen the squad before the transfer window closes.

Gerrard remains a hugely popular figure among Rangers supporters after guiding the club to the Scottish Premiership title during his first spell in charge, and while a reunion did not materialise this time, he made it clear his connection with the club remains as strong as ever.
