Southampton mocked over Spygate as Watford hand them losing Championship start
Southampton suffer 2-1 defeat at Watford as Spygate taunts return
Southampton’s return to Championship action ended in disappointment as Watford secured a 2-1 victory at Vicarage Road in Alessio Dionisi’s first league game in charge.
The Saints, who began the campaign with a four-point deduction following last season’s Spygate scandal, were unable to cope with Watford’s intensity and were repeatedly reminded of the controversy by the home supporters.
Summer signing Iker Bravo opened the scoring after Southampton gave the ball away cheaply, before teenage academy graduate Amin Nabizada doubled Watford’s advantage with an impressive finish.
Cyle Larin pulled one back for Southampton shortly after half-time, but the visitors couldn’t find an equaliser despite applying late pressure.

Watford punish Southampton mistakes
Southampton’s problems began with poor distribution at the back.
Jack Stephens’ misplaced pass fell straight to Bravo, who reacted quickly before driving into the area and firing Watford ahead.
The hosts then doubled their advantage after Ryan Manning lost possession. Nabizada raced down the right before cutting inside and sending a low effort into the far corner.
Larin gave Southampton hope in the 56th minute after being found by Cameron Bragg, calmly sliding his finish beyond Federico Ravaglia.
The new Watford goalkeeper was forced into another save moments later, denying Larin’s powerful volley.
Watford almost restored their two-goal advantage when Bravo found himself in a promising position, but Manning produced an excellent sliding challenge to block his effort.
Spygate follows Southampton
The match was also overshadowed by continued references to Southampton’s involvement in last season’s spying scandal.
The Saints were expelled from the Championship play-offs and handed a four-point deduction after the investigation into their conduct.
Taylor Harwood-Bellis, who was linked to the controversy, was subjected to taunts from Watford players and supporters after firing a stoppage-time effort wide.
The defeat leaves Southampton with an uphill task, particularly after their points deduction.
Eckert insists Southampton remain united
Despite the loss, Tonda Eckert insisted his players remain fully committed to the cause.
The Southampton boss admitted that two mistakes in possession ultimately cost his side against a Watford team that was dangerous on the counter-attack.
He also rejected any suggestion that the controversy had divided his squad, saying the players remain as united as ever.
Eckert acknowledged that discussions with the FA are continuing away from the pitch but insisted those issues are put aside once the team begins training or playing.
Dionisi celebrates winning start
Dionisi was delighted to begin his Watford reign with three points and praised his players for their work rate and togetherness.
The Italian admitted the second half became difficult when Watford were without possession for long periods, but he was pleased with the way his team defended their advantage.
For Watford, it was an ideal start to the new era.
For Southampton, however, the defeat underlines just how challenging their Championship campaign could become.
