Robbie Keane speaks out as Celtic F.C. manager speculation intensifies amid £10m transfer twist
Robbie Keane has taken a major step in his managerial career after confirming his departure from Hungarian side Ferencvárosi TC, a move that has intensified speculation linking him with the vacant managerial position at Celtic F.C..
The former striker, who joined Ferencváros in 2024 after a spell with Maccabi Tel Aviv F.C., enjoyed a highly successful stint in Hungary, guiding the club to a league title and domestic cup success across two seasons. Despite initially signalling his intention to continue building on that progress, Ferencváros confirmed on Saturday that Keane had chosen to step down from his role.

His exit has immediately fuelled talk that he is among the leading contenders for the Celtic job, with the club continuing to assess its long-term managerial situation. Keane, who previously had a short spell at Celtic as a player on loan, is believed to remain high on the club’s shortlist alongside other candidates, including Wales head coach and former Celtic forward Craig Bellamy.
At the same time, interim Celtic manager Martin O’Neill has indicated he will hold discussions with chairman Dermot Desmond regarding his future at the club after guiding the Hoops to a domestic league and cup double during his temporary spell in charge.
Keane addressed his departure in an emotional and detailed statement on social media, describing his 16 months at Ferencváros as both enjoyable and successful. He praised the club’s hierarchy, staff and players for their support and highlighted the strong bond he developed with the fanbase, which he described as among the most passionate in Europe.
During his time in Hungary, Keane celebrated winning the league in his debut season and lifting the Magyar Kupa soon after, as well as overseeing an impressive unbeaten run in European competition. He stressed that his decision to leave was made after careful reflection and that it was not taken lightly, but he felt the timing was right to move on to a new challenge.
Meanwhile, transfer developments at Celtic continue to unfold alongside the managerial uncertainty. Reports suggesting interest in players such as Soufiane El-Faouzi have been cooled, with sporting director Frank Baumann insisting that the club’s key young assets are not available for sale this summer. He emphasized that unlike previous transfer windows, there is now significantly less financial pressure to sell, allowing the club to retain important emerging talent and focus on stability.
Overall, Keane’s sudden departure has added fresh momentum to speculation around the Celtic managerial role, even as the club continues to shape its squad plans ahead of the new season.
