Rangers icon Ally McCoist hits back at Celtic chant with savage trophy claim
Ally McCoist hit back in fiery fashion after being serenaded by Celtic supporters with chants of “championees,” delivering a savage reminder of Rangers’ dominance during his playing days.
The 63-year-old Rangers icon was appearing as a special guest at Open Goal’s Scotland Summer Kick-Off Party inside Glasgow’s Hydro when sections of the crowd began taunting him with songs celebrating Celtic’s recent success.

But McCoist was not about to let the moment slide.
Clearly fired up by the chants, the Rangers legend responded with a cutting swipe at Celtic’s trophy history during his era, joking that when he was starring for Rangers, there was very little silverware sitting inside the Parkhead trophy room.
His comments referenced a very different chapter in Scottish football history, with Rangers dominating much of the domestic scene throughout McCoist’s glittering playing career. In contrast, Celtic have enjoyed overwhelming success in more recent years, winning 14 of the last 15 Scottish Premiership titles.
Despite that modern dominance, McCoist’s playful but pointed comeback quickly grabbed attention, sparking reactions among both Rangers and Celtic supporters.
Away from the banter, McCoist also shared his thoughts on Celtic’s managerial situation, admitting he is increasingly beginning to believe Martin O’Neill could emerge as a serious contender for the role next season after helping guide the club to a domestic double.
Speaking on talkSPORT, McCoist admitted he initially thought there was little chance of O’Neill taking the job permanently. However, with the silence continuing around Celtic’s plans, he now feels the challenge of rebuilding the squad and leading the next phase at Parkhead could become an attractive proposition for the manager.
