Jackie McNamara reveals his preferred choice for next Celtic manager
Former Celtic star Jackie McNamara has backed Martin O’Neill to remain in charge permanently after guiding Celtic to a league and cup double this season.
McNamara, who played under O’Neill for five years at Celtic, believes his former manager has earned the opportunity to continue in the role. Speaking to BBC Scotland, he said he would be “delighted” if O’Neill stayed for another season and even suggested the Northern Irishman could remain involved at the club in another capacity if he eventually steps away from management.

McNamara praised O’Neill’s influence during a difficult period, pointing to the trophies won despite uncertainty surrounding the manager’s temporary status and limited guarantees over transfers.
He also claimed tensions between supporters and the board have eased in recent months, with the focus shifting back to performances on the pitch and winning silverware.
Looking ahead, McNamara stressed that recruitment will be key if O’Neill stays on. He believes any permanent manager would want more influence over signings, especially with Celtic aiming to strengthen and compete in the Champions League next season.
According to McNamara, the club must also improve its recruitment structure, potentially through the appointment of a sporting director or head of recruitment to support future progress.
