Rangers face January dilemma over Olwethu Makhanya after rapid rise

Rangers could have a major decision to make in January if the growing interest in Olwethu Makhanya turns into a significant transfer offer.

The 22-year-old centre-back only arrived at Ibrox from Philadelphia Union during the summer, with Rangers reportedly paying around £3 million for his services.

He signed a four-year contract with the option of a further season, but his performances have already seen his value rise considerably.

Makhanya has quickly established himself as an important part of Derek McInnes’ defence and played a key role as Rangers entered the international break on the back of six consecutive victories.

Makhanya’s performances have caught attention

The defender’s displays in the two recent Old Firm victories have been particularly impressive.

Rangers defeated Celtic twice in quick succession, and Makhanya looked comfortable on both occasions despite the pressure surrounding the fixtures.

His ability to remain composed in possession while showing aggression when defending has made him a standout performer in McInnes’ side.

It is little surprise, therefore, that clubs elsewhere in Europe are beginning to take notice.

The CIES Football Observatory has placed Makhanya’s estimated value at £12.3 million, more than four times the amount Rangers reportedly paid Philadelphia Union.

That valuation comes from CIES’ statistical model and puts the South African ninth among Scottish Premiership players in its latest study.

Considering he had only been at Ibrox for a matter of weeks, the increase represents a significant jump in his estimated market value.

Could Rangers sell in January?

Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke has reported that Rangers could potentially consider a major offer for Makhanya if interest from one of Europe’s leading leagues develops into a concrete proposal.

Rangers are understood to want the defender to remain at Ibrox for at least the entire season, but a substantial bid could test that position.

The club now face a difficult balancing act.

On one hand, Makhanya’s value has risen dramatically and a sizeable profit on a player signed for around £3 million could be difficult to ignore.

On the other, Rangers are challenging for the Premiership title and McInnes has finally found a settled defensive unit.

Losing one of the most impressive performers in that defence halfway through the campaign could disrupt the momentum the team has built.

Rangers have little reason to rush

There is also a strong argument for Rangers keeping Makhanya beyond January.

The defender is still only 22 and is tied to the club for several years, meaning there is no immediate pressure to cash in.

If he continues performing at his current level, his valuation could rise even further over the remainder of the season.

European football could also provide Makhanya with another opportunity to increase his profile and attract even stronger interest.

For Rangers, the priority should therefore be maintaining the squad that has put them in such a strong position rather than immediately turning a summer investment into a profit.

A huge offer would inevitably create a difficult conversation at Ibrox, but unless the figure goes well beyond his current estimated £12.3 million valuation, there is a strong sporting argument for keeping Makhanya.

Rangers have already seen what he can bring to the team.

The bigger question may simply be how much his value could rise if he stays, continues developing and helps McInnes’ side compete for silverware until the end of the season.
