Rangers F.C. handed fresh penalty decision vs Motherwell F.C. as key angle overturns VAR
Danny Röhl believed Rangers F.C. were denied a clear penalty in their defeat to Motherwell F.C., and his view has since gained support.
With the match poised at 1-0, Röhl argued that Djeidi Gassama was fouled inside the box by Lukas Fadinger. However, referee Kevin Clancy awarded a free-kick just outside the area, and VAR official Grant Irvine chose not to intervene.
Former Rangers defender Alan Hutton felt the decision was incorrect, suggesting the contact occurred on the line — which would result in a penalty — and could have changed the outcome of the match.
However, ex-Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher backed the on-field call, explaining that the foul took place just outside the box. He praised Clancy’s positioning and decisiveness, insisting there was no need for VAR to overturn the decision.
