Rangers eye Tavernier replacement as Bryan Reynolds move edges closer

Rangers appear to be stepping up plans for life after James Tavernier, with Belgian-based defender Bryan Reynolds emerging as a serious transfer option ahead of the summer window.

The Ibrox club have reportedly made contact with Westerlo over the American right-back as they search for a long-term replacement following Tavernier’s departure at the end of last season.

Reynolds, 24, has attracted growing attention after establishing himself in Belgium, where he has spent the past four years — including the last three with Westerlo, making over 100 league appearances for the club.

Although best known for his spell at Roma, where opportunities proved limited, the seven-cap United States international has rebuilt his reputation overseas and is now firmly on Rangers’ radar.

According to Belgian journalist David van den Broeck, Rangers’ interest in Reynolds is concrete, with initial discussions already held between the Scottish club and Westerlo regarding a potential move.

Crucially for Rangers, the Belgian side are reportedly open to selling this summer as Reynolds enters the final year of his contract, increasing the possibility of a deal progressing quickly.

Westerlo are said to value the right-back at “a few million euros,” meaning Rangers may not need to break the bank to secure a player viewed as a possible successor to Tavernier.

Reynolds is not the only right-back linked with a move to Ibrox in recent weeks, but Rangers’ focus on a player with top-flight European experience suggests the club are prioritising ready-made quality for a key position.

With Tavernier now a free agent after ending his lengthy spell in Glasgow, Rangers know strengthening the right side of defence will be essential before the new season begins.
