Pressure grows? New update raises questions over Nicholson’s Celtic future

Celtic chief executive Michael Nicholson has received a fresh vote of confidence after being appointed to the SPFL board for the 2026/27 season.

Nicholson will replace former Rangers CEO Patrick Stewart and will serve alongside Hibernian’s Malcolm McPherson and Kilmarnock director Phyllis Carroll as part of the league’s governing structure for the upcoming campaign.

The appointment arrives after a season in which Nicholson faced increased scrutiny from sections of the Celtic support, with the Celtic Fans Collective (CFC) publicly questioning his position in a number of statements. Despite that pressure, his election to the SPFL board signals continued backing within Scottish football circles.

Alongside Nicholson’s appointment, clubs also approved a series of rule changes aimed at improving standards across the league. New minimum requirements for machinery and staffing on Premiership pitches have been introduced in a bid to improve the quality of natural and hybrid playing surfaces.

The move comes following the ban on artificial pitches in the top flight, with Kilmarnock already replacing their astroturf surface with a hybrid pitch ahead of the new season.

Further amendments were also passed to simplify SPFL Compensation Tribunals and revise restrictions affecting clubs operating under registration embargoes, marking another significant set of governance changes heading into the 2026/27 campaign.
