Norwich City FC legend Chris Sutton stokes derby rivalry with comment on Ipswich Town FC

Ipswich Town FC sealed promotion back to the Premier League for the second time in three seasons on Saturday, but Norwich City FC legend Chris Sutton still found room to take a swipe at the Tractor Boys.

Kieran McKenna’s side secured automatic promotion with a convincing 3-0 victory over Queens Park Rangers FC at Portman Road, finishing just ahead of rivals to confirm their return to the top flight. Goals from George Hirst, Jaden Philogene-Bidace, and Kasey McAteer sparked celebrations among the home supporters.

Despite the achievement, Sutton couldn’t resist reigniting the rivalry. While acknowledging Ipswich’s success and McKenna’s work, he suggested the club could face a tough challenge in the Premier League next season.

Ipswich’s previous spell in the top flight ended in disappointment, with just four wins from 38 matches and a significant gap to safety. That experience now serves as a warning as McKenna prepares his squad for another attempt at survival.

The Tractor Boys’ remarkable rise—including back-to-back promotions from EFL League One to the Premier League—has been widely praised. However, questions remain over whether the squad is strong enough to compete at the highest level.

Last summer’s recruitment was seen as a key factor in their earlier struggles. Aside from Liam Delap, who impressed with 12 league goals, many new arrivals found it difficult to adapt to Premier League demands.

As Ipswich celebrate their latest promotion, Sutton’s comments have added extra spice to an already fierce East Anglian rivalry—setting the stage for more drama if the two sides meet again in the near future.
