Motherwell goalkeeper’s fresh comments spark Celtic penalty controversy again
Celtic penalty controversy reignited after Motherwell goalkeeper’s fresh comments
Celtic F.C.’s controversial late penalty against Motherwell F.C. is back in the spotlight after the Fir Park side’s goalkeeper questioned the decision weeks after the season ended.
The incident, which proved pivotal in the Scottish Premiership title race, came deep into stoppage time during Celtic’s dramatic 3-2 win at Fir Park. Following a VAR intervention from Andrew Dallas, referee John Beaton reviewed a potential handball involving Motherwell defender Sam Nicholson before awarding a penalty.

Kelechi Iheanacho converted from the spot to keep Martin O’Neill’s Celtic side firmly in the title race — a moment that significantly altered the pressure heading into the final day.
Now, Motherwell’s goalkeeper has admitted players on the pitch were initially confused, revealing nobody inside the box even realised there had been a potential offence. Speaking after the campaign, he questioned how such a major decision could be reached so quickly after the referee’s brief trip to the monitor.
The goalkeeper also pointed to a recently surfaced angle from behind the goal, claiming it suggested the ball may have struck Nicholson’s head rather than his arm, adding further frustration over the call.
The moment remains one of the most fiercely debated VAR incidents of the Scottish season, particularly among Motherwell and Heart of Midlothian F.C. supporters, given the huge impact it had on the title race.
Had Celtic not converted the late spot-kick, Hearts would have entered the final day with far more room for error in the championship battle. Instead, Celtic went into the decisive clash simply needing victory — and ultimately got the job done.
