Martin O’Neill gives frank response over Celtic contract agreement

Martin O’Neill has offered an honest reflection on his Celtic future after officially being confirmed as the club’s permanent manager.

The Irishman has signed a one-year contract, with the option of an additional season, following an impressive interim spell that ended with Celtic securing both the league title and Scottish Cup. His appointment finally brings certainty after weeks of speculation, allowing the club to fully focus on preparations for next season.

However, O’Neill made it clear he is not looking too far into the future. Speaking to Track Radio shortly after his appointment, the veteran boss admitted he carefully considered whether he still had the energy and motivation needed for the role.

He revealed the club gave him time to think things through, joking that his age may have played a part in the decision-making process. O’Neill added that despite not yet having a proper break, he feels refreshed and mentally ready for the challenge ahead, although he acknowledged only time will tell how things unfold.

The structure of the deal appears to suit both sides. Celtic secure an experienced manager who understands the demands of the club and has already shown he can deliver success, while O’Neill avoids committing himself to a long-term project.

When discussing the option of a second year, O’Neill admitted he sees little value in looking too far ahead. He stressed that any extension would depend on both his own feelings and the club’s assessment, pointing out that football can change quickly and circumstances may look very different in 12 months.

For now, the focus remains firmly on the immediate future. Celtic face a crucial summer, with transfer business, backroom staff decisions and Champions League qualification all looming large.

O’Neill appears fully aware of the scale of the task but also comfortable with the challenge. Celtic have their manager, O’Neill has his opportunity, and what happens beyond the next year will ultimately be decided by results on the pitch.
