Fares Ghedjemis speaks out on future after Celtic interest

Fares Ghedjemis has remained tight-lipped over his long-term future as speculation surrounding the Algeria international continues ahead of the World Cup.

The winger attracted interest from Celtic during the January transfer window, though the Scottish champions were unable to finalise a deal. However, with transfer rumours continuing to circulate, Ghedjemis has insisted his attention is fixed elsewhere for now.

Speaking to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the wide man stressed that discussions about his future are not currently a priority, making it clear his sole focus is on helping Algeria at the World Cup.

“It’s too early to talk about the future. For now, my focus is on the World Cup,” he said.

“We need to prepare well. Then we’ll see at the right time.”

His response is hardly surprising given the scale of the tournament ahead. Algeria begin their World Cup campaign against Argentina on Wednesday before taking on Jordan on June 23 and Austria on June 28 in Group J.

The competition could prove pivotal for Ghedjemis, with strong performances likely to attract even more interest from clubs across Europe. Celtic are already among the sides to have monitored him, having explored a move earlier this year.

The Hoops’ interest in attacking reinforcements has not disappeared either. Since Martin O’Neill’s appointment on a permanent basis, changes are expected in the forward line this summer. Daizen Maeda continues to draw attention from elsewhere, while Luis Palma has already departed, leaving Celtic in need of additional pace and quality in wide areas.

As a result, Ghedjemis remains a player worth keeping an eye on.

While his latest comments offer no indication of what comes next, they also leave the door open to future possibilities. For now, the winger’s concentration is firmly on representing Algeria on football’s biggest stage.

From Celtic’s perspective, patience may be needed. Players involved in major tournaments often delay transfer decisions until after international duty, particularly when standout displays can spark fresh interest from rival clubs.

Still, Celtic’s previous attempt to sign Ghedjemis suggests the connection is far from random. If O’Neill is keen to strengthen his options out wide, it would not be surprising to see the club continue tracking the winger’s progress over the coming weeks.
