Major reason behind Celtic’s delay in confirming Martin O’Neill appointment emerges

Martin O’Neill agreed last week to take over as Celtic’s permanent manager after holding talks with controlling shareholder Dermot Desmond, signing a one-year deal that includes the option of an additional season.

An official announcement confirming the 74-year-old’s return to the club had been anticipated this week. However, according to reports, a delay has emerged due to unresolved negotiations involving coaches Shaun Maloney and Mark Fotheringham, with both sides still said to be some way apart in discussions. The coaching setup played a major role in guiding Celtic to a domestic double last season, lifting both the league title and Scottish Cup.

O’Neill’s expected appointment follows strong opposition from supporters to the possibility of Robbie Keane being handed the role permanently.

The Scottish champions are also preparing for a major summer overhaul, with multiple departures expected and transfer plans waiting for O’Neill’s approval once outstanding contract matters are finalised.
