Southampton continued their perfect start to pre-season with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over German second-tier side Eintracht Braunschweig on Friday evening as their training camp in Germany got underway.

The Saints produced another encouraging display and secured the win thanks to a well-worked goal midway through the first half.

After a competitive opening, Southampton broke the deadlock in the 35th minute. Lewis Dobbin threaded an excellent pass through to Damion Downs, who calmly finished past the goalkeeper to put the visitors in front.

Braunschweig looked to respond before the interval, but Southampton remained organised at the back to preserve their one-goal advantage heading into half-time.

The hosts came out with greater intent after the restart in search of an equaliser, but Southampton continued to control possession and created the better opportunities. The Saints threatened to double their lead on several occasions, only to be denied by wayward finishing and a string of defensive interventions from the home side.

As the match wore on, the contest became increasingly physical with a number of fouls disrupting the flow of play. A brief injury stoppage in the closing stages added to the tension, but Southampton remained composed and continued to look the more dangerous side.

Despite late pressure from both teams and several minutes of added time, the Saints held firm to record a deserved 1-0 victory, making it two wins from two in pre-season and providing another positive performance ahead of the new campaign.
