Celtic remain in Gineitis talks as Torino consider lowering €10m asking price

Celtic have not given up on their pursuit of Torino midfielder Gvidas Gineitis, with negotiations continuing over a possible late move for the Lithuania international.

The Hoops have been working on a deal for the 22-year-old for several weeks and stepped up their efforts as the transfer deadline approached. Although previous attempts failed to produce an agreement, the move remains possible with the Scottish transfer window still open.

Gineitis has featured from the start in both of Torino’s Serie A matches this season, despite the Italian side suffering defeats in both games. The midfielder also came through Torino’s academy, making him a particularly attractive asset from the club’s financial perspective.

Celtic have already made multiple offers for the player, and at one stage it appeared that a transfer could be completed. However, the two clubs were unable to settle on terms.

Torino willing to lower their demands

Torino had initially placed a €10million valuation on Gineitis, but that stance appears to be softening as deadline day approaches.

According to reports in Italy, the midfielder remains available for a move despite starting Torino’s Coppa Italia victory over Monza on Tuesday. That appearance could potentially have been his final outing for the club if Celtic manage to reach an agreement.

The arrival of Rolando Mandragora and Daniel Bragança has increased competition in Torino’s midfield, giving the club another reason to consider Gineitis’ departure.

Torino are also understood to believe that the midfielder has yet to reach the level of potential expected of him during his development. As a result, they are prepared to listen to offers rather than treating him as an untouchable member of the squad.

The Italian club would also benefit financially from a sale, with the majority of any transfer income representing a capital gain.

With the Scottish window remaining open until later on Thursday, Torino are hopeful that further negotiations with Celtic can lead to an agreement.

Celtic have an opportunity to strike

From Celtic’s perspective, the changing situation could present an excellent chance to land Gineitis for less than the original €10m asking price.

The midfielder may not have completely lived up to expectations in Turin, but circumstances at Torino have also played a role in his development. A move to Celtic could give him a fresh environment in which to rediscover his best form.

European football would provide another major incentive, while regular first-team opportunities in Scotland could help the Lithuanian continue his development.

Gineitis’ ability and comfort in possession could also make him a useful addition to Martin O’Neill’s midfield as Celtic look to strengthen their squad before the Scottish transfer window closes.
