Former Sheffield Wednesday F.C. forward Josh Windass has spoken warmly about manager Henrik Pedersen, the club’s supporters and his emotional departure from Hillsborough, praising the resilience shown during an incredibly difficult period.

Windass revealed he still keeps in close contact with Pedersen and believes the Danish coach deserves huge credit for guiding the club through turbulent circumstances.

Despite criticism over results, the former Owls star insisted the manager has handled the situation admirably while keeping the squad fighting throughout a chaotic campaign.

The attacker left Wednesday last year after mutually agreeing to terminate his contract alongside Michael Smith following ongoing issues with unpaid wages. Both players exercised their right to resign before departing on free transfers, bringing Windass’ memorable spell at Hillsborough to an abrupt end.

Shortly after leaving South Yorkshire, the 32-year-old joined Wrexham A.F.C. on a three-year deal and enjoyed an outstanding first season at the Racecourse Ground, scoring 16 goals in the Championship as the club narrowly missed out on the play-offs.

Windass remains a hugely popular figure among Wednesday supporters, largely thanks to his dramatic winner in the 123rd minute of the League One play-off final at Wembley in 2023, a goal that secured promotion back to the Championship. During his time with the Owls, he netted 53 times in all competitions.

Since his exit, Wednesday have endured a disastrous period which ultimately resulted in relegation from the Championship. Former owner Dejphon Chansiri placed the club into administration last October before American group Arise Capital Partners LLC completed a takeover aimed at rebuilding the club’s future.

Under the leadership of David Storch, the new ownership group are expected to continue with Pedersen as manager next season, giving him an opportunity to work under more stable conditions after a deeply unsettled campaign.

Windass believes supporters have recognised the effort shown by both the manager and players despite the difficult results. He explained that fans appreciate seeing commitment and determination even when performances and league position have fallen short.

The former Rangers man also praised Wednesday’s fanbase, describing the club as “massive” and singling out the away support as among the best in the country. He pointed to the huge crowd that attended Hillsborough despite the team sitting on minus three points as proof of the supporters’ loyalty and passion.

Windass admitted his departure was painful and not how he wanted his time at the club to end. However, he stressed that leaving was the right decision for himself and his family given the financial uncertainty and interest from other clubs at the time.
