Rangers F.C. and Nottingham Forest F.C. have missed out on promising youngster Finn Geragusian after the striker committed his future to Sunderland A.F.C. by signing his first professional contract.

The 18-year-old had attracted interest following his rapid rise through Sunderland’s academy, with both Rangers and Nottingham Forest reportedly monitoring his progress. Because he had not yet signed professional terms, there had been uncertainty over whether he would remain at the Stadium of Light.

Earlier reports claimed Sunderland faced a difficult task convincing Geragusian to stay, particularly as clubs from England and across Europe were tracking the Armenia international. His scholarship status also meant overseas clubs could have signed him for a relatively modest compensation fee under FIFA regulations.

Those concerns have now been put to rest after the young forward agreed fresh terms with the Black Cats.

Speaking after signing his contract, Geragusian expressed his gratitude to the coaching staff and his family for helping him reach the milestone. He also said he hopes to build on the opportunities he has already enjoyed and continue progressing with the club.

Academy chief John Hewitson praised the striker’s commitment and development, describing his improvement over the last two seasons as a reward for his strong work ethic. He added that Sunderland are pleased to see the teenager continue his journey with the club.

Geragusian enjoyed another productive campaign in the academy setup, registering 13 goals and three assists last season after previously contributing 19 goal involvements during the 2024/25 campaign. His performances also earned him a first senior call-up for the Armenia national football team, and he made his international debut against Belarus national football team in March.

Former Aberdeen, Aston Villa and Everton chief executive Keith Wyness believes Rangers would have viewed Geragusian as a player with significant resale potential. However, he also pointed out that adapting to the demands of playing at Ibrox can be a major challenge for young footballers, making personality and mentality just as important as talent when assessing a move.
