Former Rangers star gives candid verdict on Lewis Ferguson transfer talk

Rangers F.C. continue to be linked with a move for Lewis Ferguson, and former Rangers midfielder Derek Ferguson has hinted that discussions surrounding the midfielder’s future have taken place.

Ferguson, whose father previously represented Rangers, has been tipped as a potential target after speculation suggested his spell with Bologna FC 1909 could be nearing its conclusion. A return to Scotland has been mentioned as one possible option, with Ibrox among the destinations linked to the 26-year-old.

Derek Ferguson, who also has close family ties to former Rangers captain Barry Ferguson, stopped short of revealing any private conversations he may have had with Lewis about his future. While admitting he still offers guidance when asked, he stressed that certain matters are best kept confidential.

A move to Rangers would reportedly require a significant financial commitment, with the midfielder believed to command a fee of around £17 million. Whether the Glasgow club can finance such a deal remains uncertain.

Lewis Ferguson enjoyed his best football under current Rangers boss Derek McInnes during their time together at Aberdeen F.C. before earning his transfer to Serie A.

Although injuries have disrupted parts of his time in Italy, the Scotland international reminded observers of his quality with several impressive displays during the 2026 World Cup. Those performances have reignited interest in his future, with McInnes’ previous success in developing the midfielder viewed as a factor that could strengthen Rangers’ chances if they decide to pursue a deal.
