Fresh twist emerges in Julian Araujo’s Celtic future
One development that has perhaps flown under the radar in Scotland is Julian Araujo’s omission from Mexico’s World Cup squad.
The Celtic loanee had initially been viewed as a contender for a place in Mexico’s plans for the tournament, but an injury-disrupted end to the season has ultimately cost him. After arriving at Celtic from Bournemouth in January, Araujo made a positive early impact before a thigh injury halted his momentum in Glasgow.

As a result, the defender failed to make Mexico’s final squad, bringing an end to his World Cup hopes and raising fresh uncertainty over what comes next.
From Celtic’s perspective, it is a situation that warrants close attention. During his loan spell, Araujo showed encouraging signs before fitness problems interrupted his progress. His pace, intensity and attacking threat from right-back offered Celtic something different in a position where squad depth has often been tested.
However, the injury shifted the narrative.
Rather than ending the campaign strongly and travelling to the World Cup with Mexico, Araujo returned to Bournemouth for treatment and has now been left out of the tournament entirely.
That leaves his immediate future less clear-cut.
Celtic may still see enough potential to revisit a deal, particularly if the financial terms suit and concerns over his fitness can be addressed. Yet any permanent move would now come with understandable doubts surrounding his recovery, readiness to play regularly and overall cost.
There is also Bournemouth’s position to consider. Araujo remains under contract there, and their willingness to keep him or sanction another move could prove decisive.
For now, his long-term future at Celtic remains up in the air.
Whether he finds his way back to Glasgow is uncertain, but missing out on Mexico’s World Cup squad underlines that the situation is no longer as straightforward as it once appeared.
