Fresh EFL update emerges amid fears Championship play-off final could be delayed over Southampton controversy
English Football League have confirmed that the Championship play-off final could still be postponed as uncertainty continues to surround Southampton F.C.’s involvement amid the escalating “Spygate” investigation.

Southampton are facing allegations of spying on Middlesbrough F.C. training sessions ahead of their play-off semi-final first leg, and their place in the Wembley showdown against Hull City A.F.C. is still not guaranteed.
In an official statement released on Thursday, the EFL confirmed that disciplinary proceedings remain ongoing and admitted the final schedule could still be altered depending on the outcome of the case.
The statement read: “The EFL can today provide an interim update on the ongoing disciplinary proceedings involving Southampton following Tuesday’s Championship Play-Off Semi-Final Second Leg.
“The Commission will issue its decision as soon as possible following consideration of the relevant submissions and evidence. As the proceedings are being conducted by an Independent Disciplinary Commission, the EFL does not control the proposed timetable.”
Although the league stressed that it is currently planning for the final to proceed as scheduled on May 23 with a 4:30pm kick-off, officials also acknowledged that major changes remain possible.
The EFL added: “Supporters should, however, be aware that the outcome of the disciplinary proceedings may yet result in changes to the fixture.
“The EFL has a number of contingency plans should they be required, which also includes consideration of any appeal process, if required.”
The ongoing uncertainty has created chaos for supporters hoping to attend the Wembley final, with both Hull City and Southampton delaying ticket-sale details while awaiting further clarity from the league.
With fewer than ten days remaining until the showpiece match, anxiety is continuing to grow around whether Southampton will ultimately be cleared to compete or face a major sporting sanction following Middlesbrough’s complaint.
