Findlay Curtis Breaks Silence on Rangers Future With Six Months Left on Ibrox Deal
Findlay Curtis Opens Up on Rangers Contract Future as Ibrox Star Makes Christmas Wish
Findlay Curtis has offered an insight into his Rangers future as discussions over a potential new contract continue behind the scenes.
The 20-year-old is approaching the final six months of his current agreement, but has left negotiations to his representatives and the Ibrox hierarchy.
Curtis was reluctant to reveal too much when questioned about his contract situation, although he made it clear that he remains happy at Rangers and wants to continue his development at the club.
Having supported the Gers since childhood, the winger has ambitions of winning silverware in the famous blue jersey, with the Premier Sports Cup final against Hibernian providing an opportunity to achieve that dream.
Curtis leaves Rangers contract talks to his agent
Rangers are preparing for their December 13 Hampden showdown with Hibernian, where Derek McInnes’ side will have the chance to secure the club’s first trophy in three years.
For Curtis, lifting the Premier Sports Cup would represent a particularly special moment.
The winger enjoyed a breakthrough campaign last season, although he had to spend six months on loan at Kilmarnock to gain regular first-team experience.
His performances at Rugby Park helped the club secure their Premiership survival, with six goals making an important contribution.
After returning to Ibrox, Curtis hoped to build on that progress and establish himself in the Rangers starting XI.
However, competition from Badredine Bouanani, Min-su Kim and Djeidi Gassama has made regular starts difficult to secure.
Asked whether a new contract would be on his Christmas wish list, Curtis insisted that his agent and the club would handle the discussions.
“Listen, I’ll leave that with my agent and the football club,” he said.
“Obviously, it’s a brilliant place to play football. I’ve been here since I was six years old, so we’ll see what happens. But I’m loving it here.”
He also praised the atmosphere around the club following the arrival of the new coaching staff, believing there is a shared determination to deliver success.
Curtis added that winning the cup before Christmas would provide a significant boost for the rest of the campaign.
“It would mean everything to me if we could do that. Being a boyhood fan, it would be unbelievable. Hopefully, like I’ve said, we can.”
McInnes wants Curtis to make the most of his opportunities
McInnes understands that Curtis may find it difficult to accept a reduced role after enjoying such an encouraging loan spell at Kilmarnock.
The youngster has featured regularly this season, making 17 appearances, but only four have come as starts.
The manager has encouraged him to make an immediate impact whenever opportunities arrive, and Curtis accepts that he cannot afford to waste his chances.
“It’s natural as a footballer to be disappointed when you don’t play,” he admitted.
“Obviously you’ve seen that with myself, I played the first couple of games this season and I’ve dropped to the bench, but all I can do is just keep on working away behind the scenes and I can’t miss any opportunity. I need to do it to 100 percent.”
Despite the competition for places, Curtis insists he is enjoying working under McInnes and his coaching staff.
He also recognises that the team’s results must come before individual ambitions.
“All you can do is just keep on working hard, whether it’s the boys or whether it’s staff, all you can do is that. Listen, all the boys in my position are doing really well and the team is winning. That’s the main thing at the club.”
The winger believes impressing during training and making an impact from the bench are the best ways to force his way into the manager’s plans.
He added:
“Once I get that chance, whether it’s from the bench or by starting games, all I can do is make that impact. Like I’ve said, all I want to do is play my football here and I’m enjoying it.”
Rangers winger praises competition at Ibrox
Curtis also highlighted the quality of the other attacking players at Rangers, insisting that competition between the wingers is helping everyone improve.
He named Bouanani, Gassama, Min-su Kim and Daisuke as players who are pushing each other during training sessions.
“I just think all the wingers at this football club are top players, whether it’s Minsu, Bouanani, Gassama or Daisuki. We work with each other at the end of the sessions, whether it’s off one wing, whether it’s off the other or in the number 10.”
Curtis believes the challenge is to transfer that work onto the pitch and take advantage of opportunities when they arrive.
St Mirren return brings another opportunity
Rangers travel to St Mirren on Saturday evening, a fixture that holds positive memories for Curtis.
It was against the Paisley side that he scored his only Scottish Premiership goal for the senior Rangers team so far, rescuing a late draw during Russell Martin’s spell in charge last season.
The situation has changed considerably since then, with McInnes’ side enjoying a much stronger run and looking to close the gap on league leaders Celtic.
Curtis knows that collecting three points is the priority, regardless of how convincing the performance might be.
“Yeah, it’s huge,” he said.
“All we want to do here is pick up three points, whether the performance is not great. You need to get three points in this club, no matter what, if it’s home or away.”
With contract discussions ongoing and competition for attacking places increasing, Curtis will hope to make the most of his opportunities during the coming weeks. A first winner’s medal with his boyhood club would certainly provide a memorable Christmas present.
