Fabrizio Romano update leaves Sheffield United facing another transfer disappointment

Sheffield United look set to miss out on another defensive target this summer, with Nicolás Valentini edging closer to a permanent move to Spanish side Alavés.

The Blades had identified the 25-year-old Argentine as one of their preferred centre-back options as Chris Wilder looks to bolster his defensive ranks before the transfer window closes on September 1.

Valentini emerged as a target after returning to Fiorentina following a loan spell at Hellas Verona last season. According to The Star, Sheffield United attempted to keep their interest under wraps in a bid to avoid attracting rival suitors.

However, news of their pursuit emerged over the weekend, with Alavés also credited with an interest. It is understood Valentini’s representatives had initially explored a move to England, but talks with United cooled, opening the door for the La Liga outfit.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has now reported that Alavés have reached an agreement in principle with Fiorentina over a permanent deal for the Argentine defender, leaving Sheffield United on the verge of missing out.

The Blades remain in the market for two central defenders before the deadline, particularly with both Mark McGuinness and Nils Zätterström available for transfer this summer.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding their futures, both defenders could feature in Sunday’s EFL Cup clash with Mansfield Town, as Japhet Tanganga and Jamal Baptiste are currently the only other recognised centre-backs in Chris Wilder’s squad.
