Fabrizio Romano Reveals Southampton Interest in Former Forest Player
Southampton Step Up Interest in Feyenoord Defender Anel Ahmedhodzic
Southampton have reportedly made contact over a potential deal for Feyenoord centre-back Anel Ahmedhodzic as they continue their efforts to strengthen their defence.
The Saints are preparing to begin their Championship campaign on Sunday, when they travel to Vicarage Road for a 2:30pm meeting with Watford. With the September 1 transfer deadline approaching, Tonda Eckert is keen to add more defensive quality to his squad.
Southampton conceded 56 goals last season, giving them the joint-fifth-best defensive record in the division. However, after a four-point deduction and the disappointment of missing out on the play-off final following the ‘Spygate’ scandal, the club are determined to improve their chances of challenging for promotion.
Ahmedhodzic has now emerged as one of their potential targets.
The 27-year-old defender began his career with Nottingham Forest before spells at Malmo, Bordeaux, Hobro, Sheffield United and Feyenoord. He featured 36 times in all competitions for the Dutch club last season.
His numbers also highlight his defensive and passing qualities. Ahmedhodzic averaged 8.1 defensive actions per 90 minutes in the Eredivisie, the second-highest figure within the Feyenoord squad. He also ranked second among the team’s players for accurate passes per 90, averaging 54.1.
The Bosnia & Herzegovina international is also familiar with English football. He made 38 regular-season appearances for Sheffield United during the 2024-25 Championship campaign before the Blades eventually suffered defeat to Sunderland in the play-off final.
Scout Ben Mattinson has previously described Ahmedhodzic as “dominant”, and his experience at Championship level could make him an attractive option for Southampton as they pursue promotion.
Southampton make contact over Ahmedhodzic
According to Fabrizio Romano, Southampton have now made an approach regarding a potential transfer for Ahmedhodzic, who could leave Feyenoord after only one season with the club.
The Saints, however, face competition for his signature.
Ahmedhodzic remains under contract with Feyenoord until 2029, but the Dutch club are reportedly prepared to consider offers of around £5 million this summer.
Southampton could also face a familiar rival in the race, with Sheffield United interested in bringing the defender back to Bramall Lane. The player is reportedly open to the possibility of returning to his former club, setting up an intriguing battle for his signature.
