West Brom’s Controversial Opener Sparks Norwich Fury

West Brom forward Aune Heggebo became the centre of attention after appearing to use his arm to score during the Baggies’ Championship opening-day victory over Norwich City.

James Morrison’s side secured a 2-1 win at Carrow Road on Saturday, despite producing a performance that was far from convincing. Heggebo opened the scoring before summer signing Jimmy-Jay Morgan added a second late in the match.

However, Heggebo’s goal quickly became the major talking point.

The Norway international charged towards Morgan’s cross and attempted to finish from close range. As he lifted his leg to make contact with the ball, his left arm also came up, with the ball appearing to strike his arm before dropping into the net.

Norwich players immediately appealed to referee Tim Robinson, but the officials failed to spot the infringement and allowed the goal to stand.

Heggebo celebrated with his teammates as West Brom took the lead, while Norwich were left frustrated by the decision.

Norwich boss Philippe Clement was particularly unhappy after the final whistle, insisting the incident should have been detected by one of the match officials.

Clement argued that the goal was a crucial moment in the contest and claimed his side had been denied the chance to earn at least a point, potentially all three.

West Brom eventually doubled their advantage in the 87th minute when Morgan found the net, having arrived from Chelsea for a reported £4 million during the summer.

Norwich pulled one back through Mathias Kvistgaarden in the 90th minute, but the late effort was not enough to prevent the hosts from suffering defeat.

The unusual opening goal also triggered plenty of reaction online, with supporters expressing disbelief that the apparent handball had gone unnoticed.

Some fans even joked about the incident, while others criticised the officials for missing what they considered an obvious infringement.
