Chris Jack delivers intriguing Danny Rohl exit update after RB Salzburg interest emerges
Rangers manager Danny Rohl has emerged as a target for RB Salzburg this summer, but there is currently no indication that the German coach is looking to force an exit from Ibrox.
The Austrian side are searching for a new manager following the dismissal of Daniel Beichler after an underwhelming domestic campaign, and Rohl is understood to be among the names under consideration. His previous links to the Red Bull football network, having worked at RB Leipzig during the early stages of his coaching career, have reportedly helped place him firmly on Salzburg’s radar.
Despite the growing interest, reports from the Rangers Review suggest Rohl remains focused on his role at Rangers and has shown no signs of pushing for a move away. The 37-year-old only arrived at Ibrox last October after replacing Russell Martin and was tasked with restoring stability during a turbulent period for the club.
His first campaign in Glasgow brought mixed results. Rangers fell short in domestic cup competitions against Celtic and eventually finished third in the Scottish Premiership after a poor end to the title race, losing four of their final five league matches. Even so, Rohl’s reputation across Europe remains strong, with influential figures inside the Red Bull system, including Jurgen Klopp, said to admire his work.
Rohl’s CV includes spells with Bayern Munich, the German national team and Sheffield Wednesday, helping him earn recognition as one of Europe’s most promising young managers. His tactical profile and experience within the Red Bull model make him an appealing option for Salzburg as they look to rebuild.
However, any deal would likely be difficult to complete. Rangers are in a strong position, with Rohl contracted until at least 2028 and no release clause included in his deal. That means Salzburg would need to negotiate compensation if they want to prise him away from Ibrox.
Financially, there also appears to be a gap between what Salzburg may be willing to offer and Rangers’ expectations, while the Austrian side are still believed to be weighing up multiple candidates.
Rangers chairman Andrew Cavenagh publicly reaffirmed his support for Rohl last month, insisting the club views him as the right figure to lead the team into next season’s title challenge. Speaking to Rangers TV, Cavenagh made it clear the club believes Rohl offers their best chance of reclaiming the Premiership crown.
With pre-season training set to begin next week and Lawrence Shankland currently the only summer addition, Rangers are focused on strengthening under Rohl’s leadership. Another managerial change would represent yet another reset for a club that has struggled for consistency in the dugout, having appointed seven permanent managers since 2017.
