Chermiti exit confirmed while Watt arrival boosts Rangers’ dream summer plans

Rangers face a huge rebuilding task this summer as they attempt to re-establish themselves as genuine Scottish Premiership title challengers after finishing well behind Celtic and Hearts last season.

Following an underwhelming €43.4 million spending spree that failed to deliver the desired results, another major overhaul appears inevitable at Ibrox. The recruitment strategy overseen by Kevin Thelwell ultimately failed to pay off, leaving 49ers Enterprises with the responsibility of reshaping the squad.

Competing in the transfer market will not be straightforward. Hearts are expected to become stronger under Tony Bloom’s influence, while Celtic’s financial power could again prove difficult to match unless their rivals remain conservative with spending.

Rangers have already outlined the direction they want to take, stressing the importance of improving leadership, mentality and squad balance while also strengthening key positions across the pitch.

However, uncertainty over Danny Rohl’s future has complicated matters. The Rangers manager is attracting strong interest from RB Salzburg, and reports suggest a move to Austria could still materialise. Should Rohl depart, appointing a replacement may become the board’s immediate priority before transfer plans can fully accelerate.

Defensively, Rangers are in urgent need of reinforcements. With Nasser Djiga’s loan spell ending and concerns surrounding John Souttar’s fitness, fresh faces are required at the back. Dundee defender Luke Graham has emerged as a potential option, while Excelsior Rotterdam captain Casper Widell is viewed as a player capable of adding leadership and stability.

In midfield, Dan Neil could represent a smart acquisition after impressing during a loan spell at Ipswich from Sunderland, while Motherwell’s Elliot Watt has also been linked as a strong fit for Rangers’ needs. Watt’s ability to control matches and dictate tempo could offer qualities Rangers lacked at key moments last season, with a reported £3 million fee seen as manageable.

Further forward, change is also expected. Rangers have already secured Lawrence Shankland to strengthen their attacking options, but additional firepower remains necessary. The club are still believed to be searching for at least one more winger as part of a broader attacking refresh.

An ideal transfer window for Rangers would combine defensive restructuring, midfield control and improved attacking depth, giving the club a stronger platform to challenge for honours next season.
