Celtic rocked as Martin O’Neill hints Daizen Maeda could leave this summer
Martin O’Neill has suggested that Daizen Maeda could be nearing the end of his time at Celtic F.C., with the Japanese forward potentially preparing for a summer departure.
Maeda may make what could be his final appearance for Celtic in Saturday’s Scottish Cup final against Dunfermline Athletic F.C. at Hampden Park.
The 28-year-old has previously spoken about his ambition to test himself in the Premier League, fuelling speculation over a move to England during the upcoming transfer window. Reflecting on the attacker’s future, O’Neill indicated he would not stand in Maeda’s way if the opportunity arose, insisting the winger has earned the chance after everything he has contributed to the club.

The Celtic boss was full of praise for Maeda’s recent form, comparing his influence over the past several weeks to that of club icon Henrik Larsson. O’Neill suggested the forward has been a driving force behind the team during a crucial period and credited him with inspiring performances in the title run-in.
He also admitted Maeda’s displays are unlikely to have gone unnoticed, hinting that interest from clubs south of the border could intensify after his standout spell.
Alongside Maeda, O’Neill praised strike partner Kelechi Iheanacho for his recent impact, suggesting the Nigerian international has quickly built a strong connection with supporters through several impressive performances.
Celtic and Dunfermline are set to meet at Hampden Park on Saturday afternoon, with kickoff scheduled for 3 p.m. as the Hoops chase another domestic trophy.
