Barry Ferguson responds to growing calls for Danny Röhl to be sacked by Rangers F.C. after Celtic F.C. defeat

Barry Ferguson believes Danny Röhl is still likely to remain in charge of Rangers F.C. despite growing criticism following the club’s recent collapse in form.

Pressure has intensified on the Ibrox boss after Rangers suffered three consecutive defeats during the post-split fixtures, with last weekend’s Old Firm loss against Celtic F.C. proving to be the breaking point for many supporters. After spending close to £40 million in an effort to challenge for major honours this season, Rangers are now set to finish third, well below expectations.

Speaking on Go Radio, Ferguson admitted the recent run of results has brought pressure and criticism onto Röhl, but he suggested the manager’s own comments before the Celtic clash indicated he is already planning for next season rather than preparing for an exit.

Ferguson said he listened to Röhl’s pre-match press conference ahead of the derby and felt the German coach sounded focused on future improvements and summer recruitment. Because of that, the former Rangers captain stated he sees no obvious reason why Röhl would not still be in charge next season, although he acknowledged speculation linking the manager with VfL Wolfsburg.

The former midfielder admitted Rangers have failed to handle the pressure of the title run-in and said he previously believed the club would remain strong contenders during the split before their form dramatically declined.

The situation now leaves incoming figures Andrew Cavenagh and the 49ers Enterprises with a major decision to make regarding the managerial position this summer, especially given the level of investment made into the squad and the disappointing league campaign.

Despite the mounting scrutiny, Röhl himself insisted after the defeat to Celtic that he remains confident in his ability to lead Rangers forward. The manager acknowledged the disappointment surrounding recent results and admitted expectations are always intense at a club of Rangers’ stature, but stressed he still believes he can deliver success in the future.

Röhl pointed out how quickly momentum can change in football, noting that only a few weeks ago the mood around the club had been optimistic heading into the split fixtures. However, he admitted repeated mistakes have damaged Rangers in recent matches and accepted responsibility for improving the team moving forward.

The German coach maintained that he has the confidence and determination to continue leading the squad and remains convinced he can bring trophies back to Ibrox despite the growing calls from sections of the support for his dismissal.
