Why Rangers Must Consider Selling Their New Lammers After Just 14 Games
Rangers Must Consider Selling Bojan Miovski in January After Sam Lammers Comparisons Emerge
Rangers have enjoyed a welcome improvement in their attacking performances in recent weeks, with Ryan Naderi and Kevin Kelsy both making important contributions as Derek McInnes continues to shape his preferred starting XI.
Naderi’s brace and Kelsy’s goal helped the Ibrox side overcome Kilmarnock at the weekend, extending their winning run in the Scottish Premiership to six matches.
Despite injuries to Youssef Chermiti and Lawrence Shankland, Rangers have found a reliable source of goals through their attacking options, giving McInnes encouragement as the campaign progresses.
However, the emergence of Naderi and Kelsy has raised questions about the future of Bojan Miovski, who has struggled to establish himself since arriving at Ibrox.
The North Macedonian striker was brought in to strengthen Rangers’ forward line, but his limited involvement under McInnes has prompted comparisons with former Gers forward Sam Lammers.
Sam Lammers’ disappointing spell at Ibrox
Rangers invested heavily in their attack during the summer of 2023 after Alfredo Morelos departed on a free transfer.
Cyriel Dessers, Danilo and Lammers all arrived as the club attempted to replace the goals and presence lost following the Colombian’s exit.
Lammers joined from Atalanta for a reported fee of around £3 million, but his time in Glasgow proved frustrating. The Dutchman managed just two goals in 31 appearances before being sent on loan to FC Utrecht in January 2024.
His performances improved significantly in the Netherlands, where he found the net in seven consecutive Eredivisie matches. He subsequently completed a permanent move to FC Twente, contributing 26 goals and assists across 64 appearances in all competitions.
The 29-year-old returned to PSV Eindhoven this summer, although an injury-hit start has prevented him from making an immediate impact.
His contrasting fortunes in Scotland and the Netherlands illustrate how a forward who struggles to settle at Rangers can find greater success elsewhere.
For the Ibrox club, however, his initial spell remains a reminder of the risks involved when recruiting attacking players who fail to adapt to the demands of Scottish football.
Why Bojan Miovski faces an uncertain Rangers future
Miovski’s situation is beginning to resemble the predicament Rangers experienced with Lammers.
The North Macedonian arrived from Girona for around £2.6 million after previously establishing himself as a prolific goalscorer at Aberdeen. He scored 44 goals in 98 appearances for the Pittodrie club, creating expectations that he could deliver a similar return in Glasgow.
His Rangers career has not followed that trajectory so far.
Although Miovski scored 13 goals in all competitions last season, only seven came in the Premiership. He has struggled to reproduce the consistency that made him such an effective performer during his time in Aberdeen.
The early stages of the current campaign have offered little indication of a major turnaround. Across Rangers’ first 14 matches, Miovski has featured six times, with every appearance coming from the bench.
His only goal in that period came in the narrow victory over St Mirren, while his involvement in league football has been particularly limited.
That lack of playing time is significant because Miovski is one of the few senior striking options available to McInnes. Yet the Rangers manager has increasingly relied on Naderi and Kelsy, with the pair appearing to offer qualities better suited to his current approach.
Miovski’s lack of pace and athleticism has also raised questions about whether he is the right fit for the demands of McInnes’ system.
There are similarities with Lammers, who also struggled to make a sustained impression after arriving in Scotland following an underwhelming spell in Italy.
While the comparison does not guarantee that Miovski will follow the same career path, it highlights the importance of finding a role for a striker who has yet to establish himself at Ibrox.
January could provide a solution for Rangers
With Naderi and Kelsy strengthening their claims for regular starting places and Shankland expected to return from injury, competition for attacking positions could become even more intense.
Chermiti’s eventual return would add another option, potentially leaving Miovski further down the pecking order if the current situation continues.
For Rangers, the January transfer window could therefore present an opportunity to reassess the striker’s future.
A permanent sale would allow the club to consider alternative attacking options and potentially recover part of the fee invested in the former Aberdeen forward. A loan move could also provide Miovski with the regular football he has struggled to secure in Glasgow.
Any decision would need to take account of his remaining contract, market value and the club’s requirements for the second half of the season.
Miovski has already demonstrated that he can score goals in Scottish football, so his struggles at Rangers should not erase what he achieved at Aberdeen. Nevertheless, the current lack of opportunities raises legitimate questions about whether he can become a regular contributor under McInnes.
Rangers have seen how quickly a striker’s situation can deteriorate when he fails to fit into the team’s plans. With several attacking options competing for places, January could be the point at which the club decides whether Miovski still has a meaningful role to play at Ibrox.
