Thelo Aasgaard has admitted that leaving Rangers for Anderlecht was the right decision for his career, revealing that he felt a fresh challenge was needed.

The 24-year-old joined Rangers from Luton Town in 2024 and offered glimpses of the quality he could bring to the team. However, despite showing promise, the midfielder struggled to deliver consistently influential performances during his time at Ibrox.

Aasgaard’s career took another turn following his impressive displays for Norway at the World Cup, where he also found the net. He subsequently completed a late loan move to Belgian side Anderlecht, who have the option to make the transfer permanent for £6million next summer.

Since arriving in Belgium, the midfielder has established himself as an important member of the first-team squad, giving him an opportunity to rediscover his best form.

His departure from Rangers came after a period in which he appeared to be pushing for a more prominent role. Derek McInnes had previously praised Aasgaard’s commitment after the player cut short his holiday following Norway’s defeat to England.

Aasgaard then went on to score against Dundee United, seemingly positioning himself to play a bigger part in Rangers’ plans before his move abroad materialised.

However, the Norwegian has now explained why Anderlecht appealed to him, suggesting the club’s attraction extended beyond its reputation and stature.

Speaking to Anderlecht’s official channel, Aasgaard said: “There is so much that attracted me to this club. It is not just the size of the club.”

His comments underline the appeal of the Belgian side as he looks to make the most of this new chapter in his career, with the possibility of a permanent transfer giving him an opportunity to establish longer-term stability.

Aasgaard found the net against Dundee United and appeared poised to establish himself as an important figure at Rangers before his departure.

However, the Norwegian midfielder has since explained why he believes moving to Anderlecht was the right decision for his career.

Speaking to the Belgian club’s official channel, Aasgaard revealed that several factors influenced his decision, with Anderlecht’s playing philosophy proving particularly appealing.

“There is so much that attracted me to this club. It is not just the size of the club.

“But the style of play and everything else about it was really attractive to me. And yes, I think I needed a change at this point in my career. And I am really happy to be here.”

Aasgaard is set to spend the remainder of the season with Anderlecht as he looks to make the most of his new opportunity. Despite leaving Rangers on loan, the midfielder remains under contract at Ibrox until the summer of 2029.
